Roman Army Auxiliaries

The auxiliaries were specialized troops recruited by the empire from different regions, and were not citizens of Rome. For example, cavalrymen were recruited from North Africa, archers from Crete and Syria, and swordsmen from Spain. Naval crews were also recruited from seafaring provinces. Auxiliaries were often stationed far from home to insure they did not switch sides in a fight. They were paid only a third of what a legionary was paid. Auxiliaries could be used to patrol boarder regions. After completion of their duties, auxiliaries were given Roman citizenship as well as a lump sum of money or land.
