Palenque

Palenque was located to the west of most Mayan centers. It was the last major center between the Mayan area and non-Mayan peoples in the Northwest. The city is located on a major land route between Mexico and Yucatan at 1000 feet above sea level. The city was completed around 800 AD. It's first European explorer was Fray Ramn De Ordonezy Aguiar in 1773. The natives near the site called the the site Casas De Piedras or "stone houses." Palenque means "palisade" and the name comes from the nearby village of Santo Domigo del Palenque. The Mayans name for the site is unknown. (Fergson & Royce, 1977) and (Aguiar, 1978)
