Tulum

     Tulum stands on 40 foot cliffs of limestone overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Tulum means "wall" or "rampart" The name was given to it due to the wall surrounding the city. The walls were in a rectangular shape being about 1250 feet long and 550 deep. There were five entrances to the wall. The wall was from 10 to 17 feet in height and averaged about 20 feet in thickness. The site was a later site for the Mayans, first being occupied around 1200 AD. (Fergson & Royce, 1977)
